Dear Editor:
We agree with Senator Kennedy’s call for a national wind energy policy and a programmatic environmental review of offshore wind farm proposals (“Create a national wind energy policy,” 8/8/03). Our organizations stand united with the Senator in favor of the creation of safe, renewable energy plants in places where these facilities are appropriate. Likewise, we support the protection of birds, marine mammals, and their coastal habitats through our national and state environmental laws.
We commend Senator Kennedy for taking a strong but reasonable position on the development of wind energy in our coastal waters. We agree with him that offshore wind farms “hold significant promise, but they also raise significant questions,” and we have faith that our country can address those questions so that the promise may be fulfilled.
Sincerely,
