Dear Editor:

Darkly humorous images of birds going through “Cuisinarts” and whales bumping their heads on monopoles (‘A Mighty Wind,’ 06/15/03) trivialize the real hazards to wildlife posed by the spate of wind farms proposed for our coastline from Maine to Virginia. State and federal wildlife agencies have expressed concern publicly that these large marine wind turbine installations may fragment vital bird habitat and alter migratory pathways. Yes, we all support wind power. But oceanic wind farms need to be sited to minimize risk to endangered birds, turtles and marine mammals. This isn’t “NIMBY.” This is the stuff of true environmentalism: weighing our options to ensure we don’t cause damage we can’t repair.

Sincerely,
